Eulogy for Vivian Dillon
Thank you all for joining us today.
Your presence here means that you most likely knew Vivian as a family member or friend, so you already know what a special person she was. Much like our mother, Vivian was a gentle and loving soul. Her kindness was boundless, and was a perfect match for her long and successful career in recreational therapy, where her nursing home patients were treated to a wide range of fun activities that she devised to entertain them through their later years. For these patients, Vivian was a family member who loved them, and just happened to work at their nursing home.
During our childhood in the Bronx, I put her kindness to the test many times. We had an unusual curfew in our childhood apartment in the Bronx. Because our Dad had to wake up for work every day at 4:30 AM, he would typically go to bed around 8 PM. The unwritten rule of our house was that we better never wake up our father. Of course, that’s when the devil came out in me, and Viv and I would often find ourselves fighting over something silly. Viv’s trump card in any argument was “If you don’t stop, I’ll wake up Dad.” That worked at least 95 percent of the time. The other five percent taught me that I should always believe her threats.
Vivian was a very talented artist, and I was always so impressed with the work that she would bring home from her school art classes. I would immediately try to recreate the sketch, painting or pastel drawing she would show our parents, and Viv would always help me through the process. Our mother proudly displayed Viv’s artwork around our apartment. And it gave me great pride to see how visitors stopped to appreciate her talent.
You might be surprised to hear that our Bronx neighborhood in the 1950s was a wonderful place to grow up. We had multiple family members and close friends living right alongside of us in our apartment building and on our block. Our elementary school was two blocks away. There was a beautiful park with a playground and baseball field across the street. The Bronx Zoo and NY Botanical Gardens were within walking distance of our front door.
One of my special memories, and I believe Viv’s a well, was the time we spent with our father in the playground, riding bicycles in the Botanical Gardens - or my favorite - visiting the Zoo. It was no doubt a welcome break for my mom and a special time to connect with our Dad. Our mom had the lion’s share of work raising us. And she did so with the same love and kindness that became Vivian’s hallmark.
We will all miss Vivian’s presence in our lives, whether it is at our many family gatherings, dinners together, or phone calls to catch up on our lives. Thankfully, we will always have the many loving memories of her and the benefit of her kindness that lives in us. I am a better person for having been her brother. We are all better for having her in our lives, and we can all honor her memory by choosing kindness. Thank you.

Vivian, I am so Grateful I had the opportunity of meeting such a wonderful human being. We had so much fun learning and playing Bridge. When I joined you, Harry and Evan in March of 2011, Tuesday nights became special with lots of laughs, wine and food. 2023 we started going to Girls Night Out together which added to the fun. You are and will forever be missed. Thank you for the pleasant memories. Fondly, Darlene R Taylor
