Obituary of John L. Urban

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved uncle, John Urban, who passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on June 30, 2023.

John was born on February 21, 1924, in the Bronx, NY. He was the son of John and Blanche Urban and brother to Rita Green. He served in the US Army Air Forces during the later stages of WWII, where he assisted in the war effort.

After returning from the war, John pursued his passion for art and graduated from the Cooper Union as a graphics artist before spending several years traveling throughout Europe. He then moved to New York City, where he lived for many years and worked as a successful graphic artist.

John was a kind man who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He had a zest for life and enjoyed spending time with his cats, reading, building paper models of famous buildings, taking photographs, listening to music, attending plays/musicals, and traveling the world.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Deborah, John [Alison], Elizabeth [Robert], and Matthew [Beth], his great nieces and nephews, Nicholas, Connor, Samantha, Megan, and Jayme, and his cousin Charlie.

We want to thank the staff at Brookdale Florence for taking care of John over the past   5 1/2 years.

Rest in peace, Uncle Jack. You will never be forgotten.

“One cannot divine
nor forecast the conditions
that will make happiness;
one only stumbles upon them by chance,
in a lucky hour,
at the world’s end somewhere,
and holds fast to the days,
as to fortune or fame.”
