Sending my heartfelt condolences to the entire family for your great loss. Uncle (cousin) George was a wonderful family man, passionate about the history of Roebling and sharing his vast knowledge. He was always smiling. I will always remember my great childhood memories, especially the holiday visits on 3rd Avenue. May you rest in eternal peace, Uncle George, and please give my grandparents a hug for me up there in heaven.

George,
I’ll never forget your lively stories regarding the Roebling family, the cable endeavors, and the bridges. As a bridge buff myself I really appreciated you lending me the videos of major bridge projects.
I have a metal replica of the Brooklyn Bridge above my fireplace and will continue to think of your storied life when I glance at it.

Kathy Irene and Sue,
My Bother Jimmy was fortunate to meet and date and then marry Sue Lengel.
He then became the son-in-law of George Lengel. My Family were then privileged to meet the Legend of Roebling.
George and His Wife Kathy always made us feel like part of the Family.
George had a Presence that was Infectious. Many times I observed Him gaining and holding the attention of large gatherings at the Roebling Museum relating His Wealth of Knowledge on the Topic of "Anything You Want to Know About Roebling"
It truly was remarkable! I do believe that George might have known more about the Roeblings than the Roeblings did.
I was fortunate to have fished the Delaware with George for Catfish and Stripers. He always had a Special Cigar for each of us to "enjoy".
Whenever I watch "Who's on First" with Abbot and Costello, I immediately think of George.
I am certain that George's Presence will be enjoyed by Huge throngs in Heaven
God Rest Your Soul George!

Lifting prayers for George and the family with my sincere sympathy. I fondly remember George informing adults that they still owed him homework. Also, if you asked him a quick question about Roebling history you received the answer along with a full lesson. George was a walking textbook of knowledge but especially Roebling history.
George and Kathy were so devoted to each other with a beautiful family.
Good memories.
With sincere sympathy & love.

Nobody could have had a better friend than George Lengel. He was someone whom many people would call their best friend, and I consider myself fortunate to be among that group. George had a very serious side to him, and when he was dedicated to a project like getting The Roebling Museum funded and up and running, he went far beyond what anyone would have expected in the fervor, time, and money he expended, invariably with the love of his life, Kathy by his side.
George had many sides to his personality and stories about his humanity and kindness are legion. I remember meeting him for the first time when we were in the same gym class in high school. I admittedly was not a good athlete and actually rather clumsy. However, during one class when I really messed up while playing basketball, a member of his team started really ridiculing me. George stopped and went over to the other guy and said, “Leave the kid alone. He’s trying.” George was not a bully but he was tall, and as he looked down at the other kid, it became quite obvious that the kid had better keep his mouth shut, and I never heard a word out of him again.
Back in the locker room , George asked me if I was a walker or a busser. I was a walker and George told me to meet him after school in the gym, and he’d show me some things about playing basketball. Over time he helped me to become a better player… nothing great because, let's face it, he had only so much to work with, but at at least I could hold my own in a game.
George graduated that year and I never saw him again until I graduated from Rutgers in 1966 and went to Roebling School for an interview. There at the top of the steps on the second floor was George. He saw me and asked," Jimmy, how are you doing with basketball now? I was honest and told him, "Well, I never missed a a home basketball game at Rutgers.". We both laughed. I got the job and that was followed with more laughs than you can imagine, but, as we all know George was much more than a lot of laughs.

My memories of George will be many from his love of his family, being one of the framers of the annual Roebling Museum car show and his methods of acquiring Roebling history to name a few.
But the one that amused me was his ingenious way of acquiring artifacts from the Roebling plant during its demolition in hope to display in a Roebling Museum while under the Federal restrictive supervision.
His love for Roebling to me, was as strong, because of his early life’s history with the generosity of the plant and it impact on the development of the Town.
God bless my dear friend and family!

Please accept my deepest condolences on George's passing and know he and the family are in my prayers.
I was going to begin this paragraph saying that I was in Mr. Lengel's class during my 7th and 8th grade years at Roebling School. However, describing that as "in his class" or "he was one of my teachers" would be an understatement of the highest degree. Mr. Lengle's history and civics classes were "experiences" or "events". Classes went far beyond what one thinks of as a classroom full of students absorbing knowledge.
With Mr. Lengel - he brought facts, history, and civics to life. He encouraged us to discuss current events and to debate history and politics. The 1972 elections were coming upon and there was no shortage of spirted discussion as we learned.
It was Mr. Lengel and his teaching that in many ways inspired my career. Mr. Lengel truly loved our country, our system of government and laws, and our way of life – and this was evident in the love and awe in how he taught civics class. I remember he would discuss how our system recognized our “rights” but also underscored how we, as citizens, had responsibilities to each other and to our society as a whole. My enjoyment of his classes developed into my majoring in Political Science and in History in college as well as my lover of the law. It was Mr. Lengel that sent me to the Roebling School Library, telling me that “they have a book there called ‘So You Want to Be a Lawyer’ – which helped inspire me to go on to law school.
I am thankful that George Lengel was shared with all of us in Roebling and beyond. I moved from our village decades ago, but in my heart, I still carry the knowledge, love, and values taught by Mr. Lengel and others. Rest in Peace, Sir.

Sending deep and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Lengel's entire family.
I was a student of his in the early 70's; he was the type of teacher who was impossible to forget. Teaching us 7th and 8th graders about history and government was clearly a joy for him, and that joy inspired so many kids to not just study and appreciate history, but to give back to their communities and care about their fellow citizens.
In 2000 my first book was published; Mr. Borbi came to the reading in Bordentown, and invited me to have tea with him and Mr. Lengel the following day. We had a delightful time, and at one point during the conversation Mr. Lengel stopped and, with the look that every student of his remembers, asked " Did you do your homework?" There I was, 40 years old, and for a moment I was speechless, right back at my desk in Roebling School. And then, of course, we all cracked up. Such a wonderful memory!
Rest well, Mr. Lengel.

Condolences to the family. You all have little idea how much George inspired me.
He opened the world of, beyond Roebling's borders, to me, with his enthusiasms for history ,geography, and government, and lit many sparks in my young, and forming mind, that allowed me to venture forth to many corners of this planet, and accomplish good deeds, with fortitude, and his teachings instilled in me a sense of duty, regarding public service ,and the confidence and will to carry it out.
Thank you George !
When I last saw him he looked at me and said,"Now Billy Olenick...he REALLY owes me homework!"
Thank you Mr. Lengel

To the Lengel family, I’m so so sorry for your loss! Mr. Lengel was such a GREAT MAN!!!! School was not my best thing but he would always say Fred get your homework done and he would always say you still owe me homework Fred lol. He always would laugh when we would talk about a few of his favorite things. First was hunting we both loved the sport so much and would always tell each other our latest stories. And another was when he would show the Jersey Devil movie in school and in the scariest part he would SLAM a yard stick on a desk. He is going to be missed Loved him so much we would always have some laughs.

It’s been 50 years since we moved from Roebling but my memories with George are strong. We partied during our college years, double dated and even happened to plan our wedding day for the same date. George and I started our first jobs as teachers at the Roebling School and he almost convinced me to stay in the education field because of his love of the students. In those years our daughters were playmates and we shared many years hunting and fishing at the shore. George was proud of his slavic heritage and the Roebling community. Kathy had a super person to be very proud of as her husband.
With Sympathy,
