Obituary of Stephen J. "Fuzzy" Fazekas

Roebling: Stephen J. "Fuzzy" Fazekas, age 90 a lifelong native of Roebling, New Jersey departed this life on Monday, November 9, 2020 in the company of his loving children. Mr. Fazekas was born in Roebling to the late Stephen and Julia Yeager Fazekas. He was a diligent employee of John A. Roebling & Sons C.F. & I. Corporation for more than 30 years and continued his career at BASF in Jamesburg for 20 years. Stephen served his country with honor during the Korean War in the US Marine Corps. Fuzzy was a shining example of a true gentleman. He was a mentor to many fellow firemen and treated them as though they were part of his family. Fuzzy will be celebrated as a loving husband, father, pop pop, great grandfather, brother and confidant. His family was the single most important part of his life. He instilled guidance, support and respect in his children, nurturing them to be kind, loving and as genuine as he was. Mr. Fazekas unselfishly gave back to his community by volunteering and sharing his time and talents. Whether he was ensuring the safety of school children at the corner of Delaware and Hornberger Avenues, supporting the activities of his grandchildren or taking in a Phillies game Fuzzy was the kind of person you wanted to be around. He delighted in Sunday dinners in the Fazekas household and always managed to make breakfast a memorable part of his day. Mr. Fazekas was a member of Mary Mother of the Church Parish, Holy Assumption Church, a member of the Holy Name Society, the Bingo Committee, Carnival Committee and also served as a lector at Sunday Mass. He joined the Roebling Volunteer Fire Co. # 3 in June 1949 at the age of 19, along with 2 other men. These 3 individuals were the first junior members of the company (Junior members age 18yrs old – 21 yrs. Old) and continued with this fire company for 56 years. When the Florence Township Fire Company consolidated to become the present organization, his combined membership was 71 years. During his 71 year tenure he was Line Officer, Executive Officer, and Head Trustee for #3, Trustee (2006-2008) and Life Member for the Florence Township Fire Company, Exempt Member, Florence Township Fire Commissioner 1980 –1992. (1980 was first year for fire commissioners in Florence Township), Board of Commissioners: Chairman, Vice-Chairman and received several awards for service to Florence Township community as firefighter. Stephen joined the Roebling Rescue Squad in 1950 serving as Captain, Line Officer, Executive Officer, and Trustee. Fuzzy was a member of the Willitts Hogan Tonne American Legion Post 39 and was an associate member of the Florence Township FOP Lodge # 210. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Margaret and Joseph Fazekas and his wife of 59 years, Gloria A. Mastrosimone Fazekas who passed away in 2014. He is survived by his children and a son-in-law, Joanne Stefanoni, Trish and Tony Beach, Stephen "Fuzzy" Fazekas and Barbara Fazekas, 6 granddaughters, 3 great granddaughters, sister-in-law, Nancy T. Susko, many nieces and nephews and his canine walking companion, Bentley. Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be held privately in Holy Assumption Church and Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Avenue, Roebling. The family requests memorial donations be made to Samaritan Hospice, 3906 Church Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054 or the Florence Township Fire Department, 401 Firehouse Lane, Florence, NJ 08518 or the Florence Township FOP Lodge 210, P.O. Box 285, Florence, New Jersey 08518. Social distancing and gathering restrictions will be in effect. All visitors will be required to wear a facial covering and immediately return to their vehicles and leave the premises to allow for additional visitors to pay their final respects.
