Obituary of Helen DuBell

Helen Walder DuBell passed away into God's loving and eternal arms on October 10, 2020. She was 99 years old. A lifelong Florence resident, Helen was well known and adored by all. Born on September 30, 1921 to Magdalena Geisler and Charles Walder, Helen was the fifth of six children. Having lost her father at a young age, Helen had to leave school and work as a floor girl in a dress factory where she eventually earned the title of floor supervisor. She never gave up on the importance of an education earning her GED later in life. Preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Harry A. DuBell, Helen and Harry built a wonderful life together. She enjoyed traveling with her spouse, family vacations, Sunday family dinners, and many family traditions, but most of all she loved God with all her heart. She served in her church, attended church picnics and progressive dinners, hosted many visiting missionaries and even made a trip to the Holy Lands. She and Harry had fun with many other church couples in what they called the "Secret Pals". Many children in her church family remember her as Aunt Helen. She was a charter member of the First Wesleyan Church of Florence, where she served as a member of the church for 50 years. Her memberships included the Florence Township Chapter of Deborah, the Florence Garden Club, the Good Neighbors Sr. Citizens Club, of which she was President for many years, the JAR Sr. Citizens Club of Roebling, and the Red Hats. Helen was matriarch to a multitude of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was known as the "card shark" of the family, was always great with numbers and had an extraordinary sense of humor. She is survived by her daughters Jean Anderson of Dawsonville, Ga., Georgeann Shockley and her husband Clark Shockley of Bastrop, Texas. She is also survived by six granddaughters and their husbands: Barbara and Michael Guillote, Bette and Rev. John Young, Beth and William Murtaugh, Jennifer and Mark Hoffman, Stephanie and Tarren Dugger and Clover and David Hewell, as well as 21 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. A Homegoing and Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020 at 3 o'clock at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Ave, Roebling, NJ. Co-officiating will be Rev. Dr. Harry Wood and Rev. John Young. Interment will follow the services at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Florence. Relatives and friends may call at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Ave, Roebling, NJ, on Thursday evening from 5 o'clock to 7 o'clock p.m. Social distancing and gathering restrictions will be in effect.
